I was recently on a weekend break with a friend, chatting English, and i noticed something odd about the way i said "walking tour". I'm sure I used to pronounce the word "tour" very simply, like "tor". But i caught myself a couple of times saying something like "too-ur". I thought very vaguely, "Huh, that's odd, why do i sound posh?" ... but thought nothing more of it.
Tonight i was chatting Danish with a friend and i happened to say "walking tour" in Danish ("gåtur") and suddenly it dawned on me ... it wasn't posh; it was Danish! The word "tur" in Danish sounds like "too-ur".
There's the first evidence that my British accent is slowly changing .. and i only vaguely noticed it, and at first i didn't even understand why!
